The Final Atom Ice Session...

I'm not saying this will be the last email you get from me, but this is the last SandStorms Weekly Update.  It was a great game for the "Cup" on Friday!  The coaches are really proud of the players who demonstrated the skills they learnt this year with great team play, skating, passing and checking.   Special thanks to Mike for a terrific job of announcing; Jim Hughson couldn't have done better!  For those who are interested in such things, the final stats have been posted.  A few pictures from the game can be viewed here  http://picasaweb.google.com/tsnikolai/DubaiSandStormsAtomsLastGame#.

Monday is our last ice session and will be the traditional "Parent/Kid" game.  Please keep in mind that we'll have around 50 skaters so we'll have to be patient with the ice time.  For simplicity, we'll keep the Flames/Canucks teams together.  If the parents are able to wear jerseys similar to those colours, that would be helpful.  I would strongly suggest that parents dress in full gear, but will only insist on a minimum of a helmet and gloves.

After the game, please stay for a short ceremony accompanied by pizza and soft drinks in the "Red" banquet room.  As it's a school night, we'll keep it brief.

Please note that the April Skating Clinics are now full.  Once again, thank you for your support.  I'm sure you will be impressed with what the players are going to learn.

On a personal note, I'm overwhelmed by the generous gift of the framed souvenir SandStorms sweater.  It's a great keepsake and I'll be proud to display it prominently in our new house.  Thank you very much to the organizers and contributors.  It means a lot to me.

See you at the rink Monday!

The Season Winds Down

For those who made it to the Qatar tournament, I hope you had a good time.  On behalf of all the coaches, let me say that we're proud of each and every player.  All the teams performed well and displayed good sportsmanship while achieving impressive results.  Our U12A "Red" team won the Bronze medal while the "White" team, supported by Fabian, Kevin Reside and Keith "Peanut Butter" Forsythe,  took home the Gold.  The SandStorms U9 team also won Gold winning every game quite handily.  I'd like to make special mention of our U12B team;  This team was at a very big disadvantage as it was staffed with many underage players.  Our Atoms, William, Bradley, Taylor and Alex P. Geisler, supported by Alex Nawfal in net who played very well in his first tournament, performed valiantly.  This team also had our Atom Tyler Cain, but even he is underage for this division.  My hat is off to Coaches Pat Cain and Dan Pranno whose team still managed 1 win and 2 ties despite having a ridiculously young team.  Our Atom players who carried the team are the SandStorms tournament heroes.

The Qatar Raider organizers did a terrific job and were consistently friendly and helpful.  I have sent a thank you letter to them on behalf of all 4 of the SandStorm teams and I hope this tournament will be supported in the future.  Finally, a HUGE thank you to Team Manager Tracy Bischoff who did a terrific job organizing the hotel and bus transfers.  If you have never done this task, you probably don't realize how much work it is.  Just my sms's alone kept Tracy busy for most of the tournament!

We are now at the last regular week of the SandStorms Atom season.  We will have a practice tomorrow Monday March 22nd at Al Nasr, Be Ready 1730.  Friday will be the finale of the League season and even better, it's the late start at the Dubai Mall, Be Ready 0845.  The final ice time will be next Monday at Al Nasr and we will have a special event planned.  More details to follow.

The skating clinics with Georgie Hallat that I am organizing are just about full.  I have room for another 5 skaters on a first come first served basis.  As a reminder, these sessions will run for 3 consecutive Mondays at Al Nasr, 1730,  starting April 19th.  More details are on the Atom Website.  Coach Pat is trying to get enough Novice aged players for a 2nd group to run just before ours.

Don't forget to about the annual SandStorms banquet, April 29th at 1800.  Ticket are on sale now.  Contact   sandstormspresident@gmail.com

See you at the rink,

Coach Tim

A Busy Week Ahead for SandStorms Atoms

We have a busy week ahead for the SandStorms Atoms as we have an unprecedented  3 U12 teams flying to Qatar for the U12 Tournament on Friday March 19th.  Thanks to Tracy, you should now have all your accommodations booked and hopefully you've also found good flights.  Here some additional points for you to know:

  • The organizers are planning a reception at the rink Thursday March 18th at 1900.  They've requested as many players and coaches attend as possible.  Your can bring you skates as the ice will be available.

  • Fly Dubai will not allow sticks as check-in baggage.  Therefore, those of us flying on Emirates will be taking a team stick bag.  If you are travelling on Fly Dubai, please give your stick to me after practice this week.

  • We have a final schedule.  You can view it here.

Other News:

Our regular Atom practice will take place Monday March 15th at Al Nasr, Be Ready 1730.  Be advised that there will not be any ice time on Friday because of the Qatar tournament.  The next Dubai ice time will be the following week, Monday March 22nd at Al Nasr.

You should have received an email from Isabelle outlining plans for Spring Hockey.  To be clear, "Spring Hockey" is not an extension of the regular season and it meant as extra time for the players who wish in a more informal atmosphere than the regular season.  It is not a developmental league with practices as the league season is.  This hockey tends to fill up quickly so I suggest you sign up soon.

Rule Clarification - A few parents are asking me why we do modified shoot-outs instead of serving time in the penalty box.  I apologize as I should have explained this much earlier.  I picked up this procedure in Canada last year.  Although not perfect, I really like it because what normally happens is that players will take penalties at the end of their shift.  They serve their 2 minutes at a time that they would have been resting on the bench anyway.  At a young age, some players actually think it's cool to sit in the box.  Unfortunately, the offending team now has to play a man short and an innocent kid now has to miss a shift.  I just don't think that that's fair.  Furthermore, at this age and level we can't really properly teach Power Plays and Penalty Kills.  Finally, the odds of scoring a Power Play goal are miniscule at this level so the deterrent factor just isn't there.  In general, the player that was fouled is supposed to take the Penalty shot.  Sometimes the refs are not sure who was fouled and in those cases the Coaches should help pick the appropriate player.

See you at the rink, either here on in Doha!

Set Your Alarms...

This week we have the pleasure of the early game;  Friday March 12th, Be Ready 0625 at the Dubai Mall.   Hopefully the lost sleep is made up for with the quiet roads and ultimately the well played hockey.

For those going to Qatar, you should have your travel arrangements pretty well set by now.  If there are any problems, please let me or Tracy know.

See you at the rink,

Coach Tim

Canada Brings Home the Gold!

Sorry, I saw last week's headline and I couldn't resist.  Congrats to Sidney Crosby, Roberto Luongo and Team Canada on the Olympic Gold Medal!

Anyway, back to our hockey.  It's a practice today at Al Nasr, Be Ready 1730.  We have the "sleep-in" game this Friday March 5th at the DM, Be Ready 0845.

By now you should have booked your flights to Doha for the Qatar tournament.  U12's are on Friday March 19th.  Hotel info should be available from Tracy this week.

The latest March schedule is available on the website.

If you're ever in doubt about an ice time, or there is a contradiction, use the Atom website as the one that I guarantee.

See you at the rink,

Coach Tim

SandStorms Bring Home the Gold!

It was another clean sweep for the U12 SandStorms at the Al Ain Tournament as the U12 "A" SandStorms White team (Peewees) won that division our Red team (Atoms) coming in 2nd place.  In the U12 "B" division it was another Gold Medal for our team.  A special thanks/congratulations to Coach Pat Cain and Coach Dan Pranno for guiding their team to a victory despite missing some key players.  Once again we can also be proud of our U12 "Red" team who beat Abu Dhabi and Qatar to make the finals even though we are an U11 team.   In the end it was an extremely long day at the rink but was ultimately rewarding.

There is one more tournament for our group this season and that's in Qatar, March 19th.  It will most likely involve flying up to Doha on Thursday March 18th with the opportunity to return to Dubai after the tournament on the Friday.   Obviously this type of trip involves even more planning than the UAE tournaments so I need to know relatively soon who is committed.  Please let me know by Thursday Feb. 25th if you can commit to this event.  It seems certain that we will have at least 2 teams, but may even have 3 if there is enough response.  For various reasons the make-up of the teams is going to be very difficult to sort out, so please let me know as soon as you can, but no later than the 25th.

****PLEASE BE AWARE THAT YOU MUST HAVE 6 MONTH'S VALIDITY ON YOUR PASSPORT TO TRAVEL TO QATAR.****

We're back to a normal week of Atom hockey with a practice this Monday February 22nd at Al Nasr, Be Ready 1730 and a regular league game Friday February 26th, Be Ready 0730.

Thanks again to all the parents for their tremendous support this weekend.

See you at the rink,

Coach Tim

Al Ain Tournament Looms

This week we have our 2nd Tournament.  This one is in Al Ain (Hili Fun City) on Friday February 19th.  I have seen the draft schedule and I can tell you that it's going to be a LONG day.  It's very important the the players are well rested and bring plenty of healthy food and water.  They won't make it through the day on fries and pop!  As soon as I have a more specific schedule, I'll post it.  As a 'head's up,' the final Championship game doesn't end until 2100.

Next regular session is Monday February 15th at Al Nasr, Be Ready 1730.  Obviously there will be no regular game at the Dubai Mall this Friday.

Planning ahead, there is a U12 tournament scheduled for Qatar on March 19/20.  It is supposed to follow the same format as the UAE tournaments.  I will only start to consider planning this event after the Al Ain tournament, but if you are interested, please mark it in your calendar.

See you at the rink

Atom Update for January 30th

Great game by the Flames last Friday and a well deserved 6-4 victory.  Improved team play was a big reason for the result with better passing and line changing.

This is a routine week, at least as far as ice time goes.  We're at Al Nasr tomorrow, Monday February 1st, Be Ready at 1730.  Friday is the SandStorm's version of a leisurely sleep-in with a Be Ready time at the DM of 0845.

The Coaches would like to thank all the players and parents for excellent on-time performance last week.  Last practice, for the first time that I can remember, we had all the players ready fully briefed and at rink side as the Zamboni was finishing.  It's a terrific way the run a practice and beneficial for everyone.  I've also noticed that with the players forced to dress themselves, it's usually their fault if they're not ready on time.  This is actually a good thing as we can work with the individuals to make them more responsible for their time management.  Some of the 1999 players still have difficulty tying their own skates.  We will continue to help and encourage, but it may be a good idea to make sure at home that the player can do this basic skill.  As I keep saying, it's required in Europe and Canada so there's no reason why our older players can't take care of themselves.

In other news, although I greatly enjoy coaching the kids the constant criticism that goes with the job can be a challenge.  I have learned to accept it but occasionally a line is crossed and in a fit of emotion a parent will fire off an email that amounts to a personal attack.  Even worse, on at least 2 occasions this season my family has been brought into it.  To even mention my family in a complaint is so inappropriate it's beyond my belief.

It's always a good idea to allow for a cooling off period before sending an angry email, but even if that is not possible, you cannot send it to me.  All complaints and suggestions about anything to do with the SandStorm Atoms must be sent to our Team Manager, Tracy Bischoff at britrac@mailme.ae  Tracy is a very experienced Sport's Mom and she will act as a filter and a go-between.  This is not to say that I or any other volunteers are beyond criticism; Far from it.  Many changes and improvements are made every week via feedback and suggestions.  I really do appreciate the support of the vast majority of parents.

Finally, we are just about ready to announce the various teams for the upcoming Al Ain tournament.  The Coaches were caught by surprise when the number of players registered for Al Ain exceeded the number we had for the Dubai tournament so it has taken a while to balance out the teams.  Once announced, if you have comments about the teams please send them to Tracy.

I will have to miss the Friday game and next week's practice, but other than that, see you at the rink.

Date Set for Al Ain Tournament

I have just been informed that the Al Ain U12 Tournament will take place exclusively on Friday February 19th at Hili City in Al Ain.  (The U9 Tournament will be the next day.)  Much to our surprise, we have actually had an increased number of players sign up compared to the last Tournament in Dubai.  In fact, we have a few too many players for 3 teams, but not nearly enough for 4 teams.  Therefore, the Coaches are going to have to make a few compromises.  At any rate, the composition of the teams will remain similar and there will be 1 B team to go with 2 A teams.  Keep in mind that these are "Under 12" (Players born 1998 and earlier) tournaments and involve players from our Novice, Atom and Peewee divisions.  Final line-ups will be announced shortly.

PHOTO DAY - Next Monday's practice will be another Photo Opportunity.  Please bring your House Team jersey to wear.

Next practice is at Al Nasr, Monday January 25th, Be Ready 1730.    Next game is at the DM, Friday January 29th, Be Ready 0730.

As a gentle reminder, all players are required to carry their own equipment and dress themselves.  Players born in 1999 are earlier are required to tie their own skates.

See you at the rink,

Coach Tim

Update for the Week of January 17th

We have Atom Practice # 17 tomorrow at Al Nasr Monday January 18th, Be Ready 1730   On Friday January 22nd, although we've dodged the bullet for a while, we're on the early shift at the Dubai Mall - Be Ready 0625.  We have 2 special guest goalies for Friday's game; Alex Nawfal will be tending for the Canucks and Antoine Pelegry will be between the pipes for the Flames.  Good luck!

I'm quite happy with the improving play witnessed during the games.  Passing in particular has improved considerably and I think that the 4 on 4 tourney helped.  One small area we can get better at is getting ready.  As mentioned at the beginning of the season, at this level all players must dress themselves.  In addition, while the coaches will help the 2000 born players with their skates, the 1999 and older players are required to tie their own.   Just so you know, I didn't make up this age requirement; it was taken from Hockey Canada and is the norm in Europe as well.

It was suggested that some players may wish to see the practice plan ahead of time.  The detailed lesson plan is usually ready a day or 2 before practice.  If your player would like to review it, let me know and I'll add you to the Coach's distribution list.

Have a great week and see you at the rink.

Coach Tim

Al Ain Tournament Announced

I have just received confirmation that the U12/U9 tournament in Al Ain is scheduled for February 19, 20, 2010.  The normal practice is for one day to be U12 and one day to be U9, but that has not been confirmed yet.  As soon as I have the exact day pinned down, I'll let you know.

The number of registrants will determine the number of teams.  Last tournament we had 2 U12A teams and 1 U12B team and we are hopeful to have the same number this time.  U12 is meant for players born 1998, 1999, 2000, so many of the players will come from our Peewee division.

The normal caveats apply;  This is a competitive tournament and as per the SandStorms constitution the coaches will pick the best players for each division.  As well, unlike House League games, there is no promise of equal ice time for all players.

Players who wish to play in this tournament can email me their intentions at tsnikolai@gmail.com I need to know by Jan 22nd in order to meet the associated deadlines.

There are only 2 UAE tournaments each year, so don't miss the last one by forgetting to register!

Regards,

Coach Tim

Atom Weekly Update - Jan. 10/2010

Monday January 11th, there's a regular practice at Al Nasr, Be Ready 1730.  Our weekly game is at the Dubai Mall on Friday January 15th, Be Ready 0845.

First the 'not so good news.' Our on-time performance slipped a bit this week.  Your efforts to ensure that your players are at the rink to "Be Ready" at the appointed time are very much appreciated.  The games and practices start at the "Be Ready" times.  If you miss these times, your player is missing a part of the game or practice.  Furthermore, occasionally, such as last Friday, we're able to get on the ice early.

Second, the "interesting news." On January 22nd, neither of our regular All-Star goalies are available.  That offers the rare chance for other players to try their hand in goal.  Please let me know via email if your player would like to give it a try.  We'll need 1 volunteer from the Flames and another from the Canucks.  The Peewees are also looking for a goalie volunteer from Atom for that day.

Finally, we're pretty well at the half-way point for House League games.  The Coaches met and considered all options to ensure the best possible competition.  In the end, Coach Jonnie will be doing some minor 'tinkering' with the rosters.  He'll be contacting the players involved and I'll make it official once everyone has agreed.

Have a great week and see you at the rink.

Coach Tim

Happy New Year SandStorms Atoms,

This is a reminder that there is practice today at Al Nasr, Be Ready 1730.

We have a league game Friday at the DM, Be Ready 0730.

The schedule for January is up to date on the Atom website, http://tsnikolai.com/atoms.htm

See you at the rink,

Final Regular Ice Session - December 18th

As previously discussed, with the Christmas holidays starting and the Tournament Team away, there are very few Atom players available for our last regular session on Friday December 18th.  On top of that, as we were scheduled for the none-too-popular 0630 slot, it's preferable to combine with the other divisions.  Therefore, unless you arranged a specific exception with me, players born in 2000 will play with Pat Cain's group at 0900.  Players born in 1999 (or 1998) with be with Coach Kelly at 0745.  You may also wish to liaise with Kelly or Pat directly.

One final note, the Year End Atom 4 on 4 Tournament is filling up.  If you haven't already done so and your player wants to participate, you need to register soon.

http://www.tsnikolai.com/4on4tourney.htm

Have a great game, and if I don't see you, have a very Merry Christmas.

Coach Tim

December 13, 2009

Atom Year End 4 on 4 Tournament is a Go!

Thanks to the Dubai Ice Rink, who have helped with the ice time, we are now able to  host the first ever hockey tournament at the Dubai Mall!  The Tournament is planned for December 30th and 31st from 0700-1000.  All the details are here:  http://www.tsnikolai.com/4on4tourney.htm  If you have previously expressed your interest, there's no need to contact me.  However, if you have not registered, there are limited spaces so please let me know early to avoid disappointment.  I really think that this will be a lot of fun for the kids in a completely different environment.  By the way, I need assistance with the various tasks involved, so if you're willing to help, please fill out this form or just email me.

In other news, tomorrow is our last regular practice before the Christmas break.  We're at Al Nasr, Monday December 14th, Be Ready 1730.  For the past few weeks, attendance and on-time performance has been excellent and it's greatly appreciated.

Next Friday, December the 18th, we were scheduled to have the early ice session, 0630.  However, with quite a few families leaving for holidays, and the Tournament Team away, there were only 8 players.  Coach Pat Cain and Coach Kelly Jones also have depleted ranks so they have agreed to take our players with their groups.  For 2000 players, you can expect to play with Coach Pat, on ice at 0900. For 1999/1998 players, you can expect to go with Coach Kelly at 0745.  If there is any confusion or you have questions, please email me.

Drive carefully in the rain, and see you at the rink!

Coach Tim

SandStorm Atoms Back in Action

It was nice to be back on the ice after the Eid/National Day break.  The Flames and Canucks put on a pretty good show with a few excellent efforts. Special mention to Noah who had 3 assists and New Ethan who had 2 goals.  Also congratulations to Armaan who scored his first ever hockey goal!  This game was recorded and I've put a few of the highlights on the Photo/Video page.  Please check them out!

We have 2 regular session this week which means practice at Al Nasr tomorrow, Monday December 7th, Be Ready 1730.  Our next league game will be at the Dubai Mall Friday December 11th, Be Ready 0845.  It's hard to believe, but we're already at the 1/2 mark of the season.  Our plan was always to review the 2 house teams at this point, so during the Christmas break, Coach Jonnie will decide if we need to re-draw the teams and start another season.

Breaking News:   I am putting together a plan to have a "Year End 4 on 4 Atom Hockey Tournament."  4 on 4 hockey has become very popular in Canada as a way for the players to have the chance to be creative and to have a lot of skating.  The proposed dates are December 30th and 31st at the Dubai Mall from 0700-1000.  We would need a minimum of 4 teams consisting of 8 players and 1 goalie.  I have not yet finalized the ice time and jerseys, but you can help me determine the interest level by emailing me now at tsnikolai@gmail.com.  Further details are here.

See you at the rink,

Coach Tim

SandStorms Roll at First UAE Tournament - The Weekly Update

Congratulations to all the SandStorm teams who excelled at last weekend's U12 and U9 tournaments.  First off, our U12B team went undefeated and captured the Championship Trophy.  Our team was lead by Captain Noah along with Alternate Captains Jasmine and William.  These 3 as well as goalie Kristian Hansen took home game MVP awards.  Well done!

Next up, our Atom Tournament Team had the difficult task of competing in the U12A pool even though we're a U11 team.  We ended up in the final game after wins against Qatar and Abu Dhabi.  The Championship game was hard fought, but we suffered 2 late goals and lost 4-1 to the SandStorm Peewee U12 team to finish with the Silver Medals.  Atte, Parker, Zach Mayo and Antoine all took home individual MVP awards.

On Saturday the SandStorm's U9 teams had equal success as the 2 Dubai teams met in the Championship game.  Our Atom, Tyler Cain, scored the tying goal with the goalie pulled and less than 20 seconds left.  Parker Vander Staak's little brother Coop then buried the winner in OT!

As much as we're proud of the success achieved, as Coaches we also saw lots of areas for improvement.  Along that vein, today is Atom Practice # 12 at Al Nasr.  All players need to "Be Ready" by 1730.

Last week's Yellow Jersey winner was Parker Vander Staak who lead the way with his hustle.  The Coaches will be looking for an equally determined effort today for the next winner.  Who knows?  Maybe Parker will keep it?

After this practice, there is an extended Eid break.  We will have no more formal ice sessions until Friday December 4th at the Dubai Mall.

Speaking of holidays, our last session before the Christmas break is booked at the Dubai Mall on Friday December 18th.  The Atom Tournament Team will be in Switzerland which seriously depletes our ranks.  I need to know by next week (Nov. 30) how many players will still be in Dubai and playing on that day.  If the numbers warrant, I plan to set up an challenge with players from other divisions.

Finally, Steve Braden has kindly donated "STOP" stickers to be affixed at the back of the player's helmets.  Hitting from behind is the #1 cause of serious injuries in Minor Hockey and all of us have to do as much as we can to prevent this dangerous play.  We will be attaching the stickers at today's practice.

Congratulations once again to all the Tournament participants.

November 15th Atom Weekly Update

Hello SandStorm Atoms.  For this week we have our normal practice Monday Nov. 16th at Al Nasr.  Be Ready 1730.  Last week was amazing with 100% attendance and almost 100% on-time.   Unfortunately for me, once again work is not cooperating and I will miss this week's practice.  Coach Jonnie will run the show ably assisted by rest of the Coaches.

The best Sports Photographer around is Steve Braden and we're fortunate that he's going to be taking our hockey pictures again this year.  He'll be there tomorrow so please have your player bring his/her House League jersey.  For the Canucks, we'll have to take the team picture on another day, but the individual pictures will be taken.

Congratulations to Tyler Cain who gave an outstanding effort at practice last week to win the prized Yellow Jersey which he gets to wear tomorrow.

Friday November 20th will be a full day of "Under 12" hockey at Al Nasr.  If your player is participating in that tournament, you've been contacted by me by now.  I'll be sending reminders and final schedules later this week.

The Atom site is up to date if you ever want the latest info:  http://www.tsnikolai.com/atoms.htm

Have a great week,

Coach Tim

November 9, 2009

Good day SandStorm Atoms - This is your weekly update.

Normal practice tomorrow, Monday Nov. 9th  at Al Nasr.  Be Ready 1730.  Our 4th game is this Friday November 13th at the Dubai Mall -  Be Ready 0845.

Congratulations to "New" Ethan (DeBruyn) who won the coveted Yellow Jersey at last week's practice.  The player who works the hardest in practice tomorrow will win the right to wear Yellow the following week.

As a reminder, the U12/U9 UAE tournament will take place at Al Nasr Nov. 20/21st.  All of our U12 tournament games are on Friday Nov. 20th.  Also as a reminder, there is no regular hockey during Eid break so no game Friday Nov. 27 and no practice Monday Nov. 30.

As always, there's more info here:  http://tsnikolai.com/atoms.htm

See you at the rink tomorrow,

Coach Tim

Weekly Atom Update:

Well, it had to happen eventually;  Emirates finally caught up with me and gave me a schedule I can't mend.  Therefore, for the first time in 2 years, today I'm going to miss an Atom session.  Nonetheless, practice goes on today, Monday November 2rd at Al Nasr, Be Ready 1730.  Coach Jonnie will be running the session with the help of all the other coaches.

This Friday will be our 3rd league game at the Dubai Mall, Be Ready 0730.

We started a new motivational tradition within the Atoms last week.  The player who practices with the most effort is rewarded with the prized "Yellow  Jersey" to signify, as with the Tour de France, that he/she "leads the pack."  The player then gets to wear the jersey at he next practice.  Furthermore, they get to autograph the jersey for posterity.  Congratulations to the first winner, Simon Deldon.  Check out his fancy autograph!

Dubai Tournament Update:

I have been informed that the U12 tournament will take exclusively on Friday November 20th, with the U9 tournament taking place Saturday November 21st.  I will give specific game schedules as they become available.

As always, there's more information here: http://www.tsnikolai.com/atoms.htm

Have a great week,

Coach Tim

October 26, 2009

Weekly Atom Update:

Our next session is Monday Oct. 26th at Al Nasr, Be Ready at 1730.  On Friday Oct. 30th, we have our 2nd game at the Dubai Mall and it is the early one,  Be Ready at 0625.

The flu bug has hit hard and the Ironman Streak of Nicholas Bischoff has also been ended.  Now it has hit me and I'll be a game time decision for practice today.

Our first game last Friday was pretty good, but there's clearly lots of work to do on positional play and being 'smart' with the puck.  We've made one trade as there was a glut of defensemen on one team and very few on the other.  Therefore, the Canucks have traded Tyler Cain (F) and a 2nd round draft pick to the Flames for Bradley Ismail (D) and future considerations.  As a result, Coach Pat Cain will no longer work the bench for the Canucks and I'll take his spot.

Tournament News:   Thank you to everyone who signed up for the Nov. 20, 21 U12 UAE tournament at Al Nasr.  I can confirm that we will have 3 teams entered.  Coach Kelly Jones has assembled a team of 1998 born players from his Peewee division supplemented by a couple of Atom players for the "U12A" division.  We will also enter our Atom "Tournament Team" in the U12A division.  We will then have a third team entered in the U12B tournament.  For all the Atom aged players it will be difficult playing against Peewee aged players, but we will certainly do our best.  And remember, we did win the U12B tournament in Al Ain last year with essentially a team of underage players.

That's it for now.  Stay healthy and I'll see you at the rink.

Coach Tim

Weekly Atom Update:

Our next session is Monday Oct. 19th at Al Nasr, Be Ready at 1730.  Our Friday session at the Dubai Mall is the later one,  Be Ready at 0845.  Friday will be our first Official League Game, Flames vs. the Canucks.  Click here to see the team list.

We continue to have terrible 'on-time' performance.  Last week there were 6-10 players late for each session.  The pre-session briefing is important for your player and when he/she's late, it's disruptive for everyone.  Things cannot continue like this, so your improved efforts would be very much appreciated.

Now the good news.  After a bit of a rocky practice Monday, we had a terrific session on Friday.  The players skated hard and learned the important skill of 'driving to the net.'  We then had a very good controlled scrimmage.  Again, the players who missed the briefing appeared a little lost, but once we got going there were some very smart hockey plays.  A Coach's dream came true when New Ethan took the net drive skills we had practiced and applied it to a game situation resulting in a goal.

Also on Friday, for the first time in 2 years Mika Nikolai missed a hockey session due to illness.  That's over 100 hockey sessions without a miss!  Nicholas Bischoff is now the reigning "Ironman" as he never missed a session last year and has made all sessions this year.  On time too, I might add!

Tournament News:  As a reminder, there is an Under 9/Under 12 tournament in Dubai (Al Nasr) November 20, 21.   We'll either have 2 or 3 teams of U12 players made up from the Atom division and the 1st year Peewees depending on how many players are interested.   In order to meet the deadlines, I'll need to know by Oct. 24th if your player is wants to participate.  To save a last minute rush, please email me as soon as you know - tsnikolai@gmail.com   Please understand that unlike the house league games, the tournaments have a more competitive element and there's no guarantee of equal ice time for every player.  Also, every tournament some players are not registered and then after the teams are set, parents try to get their player added.  Out of necessity, we've had to take a hard line and we do not accept entries after the stated date, Oct. 24th.

That's it for this week, see you at the rink...hopefully on time!

Last Week's Atom Update:

Hi SandStorms Atoms, here is your weekly update.  For this week's ice time,  our next session is at Al Nasr Monday, Oct. 12, Be Ready at 1730.  At the end of the week we have the middle session at the Dubai Mall. Friday Oct. 16th,  Be Ready at 0730.  For some reason, our on-time performance is significantly worse than last year.  Suffice to say that when a player is late, he/she not only misses out on the pre-session instructions, but also that player disrupts the other players by coming in half-way through the instructions and by not being fully in tune with what's expected.  Obviously in Dubai there are road challenges, but we had success last year so we'd really appreciate the effort this year.  Thanks!

The most exciting news is that Coach Jonnie has picked out the teams for our Regular League season.  We will announce the teams at practice this Monday.  We will be conducting a controlled scrimmage this Friday and then the first league game is planned for Friday Oct. 23rd.  We have a couple of minor changes for this League season;  Coach Ray and Coach Jonnie will be in charge of one team, while Coach Darryn and Coach Pat will take over the other.  As well, we tentatively plan to have 2 seasons.  If one team is dominating, the season will end at the half-way point and 2 new teams will be selected to start a 2nd season.

And finally, on a minor note, we've told the players that they're old enough to a) dress themselves and b) carry their own 'stuff.'  We can help tighten their skates, but other than that, they should be left alone in the dressing room and take responsibility for getting ready on time.  It's all part of the experience!

Thanks again and see you at the rink,

Coach Tim

Weekly Update

Hello Sandstorms Atoms and here is your weekly update, admittedly a little late this week; My job keeps getting in the way of my full-time hockey occupation!

Practice is today at Al Nasr, Be Ready at 1730.  Next session is at the Dubai Mall, Friday October 6th, Be Ready at 0625.  Yes, it's the early one...Please continue to let TM Tracy Bischoff britrac@mailme.ae (+971502734362) know if you player cannot make a session or will be late.

Last Friday's NSST (Skills test) was a great success thanks to all the volunteers.  We now have a base line for each player, as well as a divisional base line.  Our task is to work throughout the year to improve those basic skills.

For those who applied to be on the "Tournament Team," we have used the data as an objective measuring stick to determine each player's relative level and to have a fair method to select the most competitive team possible.  As previously mentioned, the skills test will the primary tool to determine the team, but issues such as attitude and commitment will also be weighed.  I will be meeting with the other Tournament Team Coaches after practice today to confirm our draft list.  After that, I will send out emails to all the families that applied and post the team list on this website.  I hate the fact that there will be disappointed young players in this process, but there is no way to meet the objectives of the Tournament Team without moving to a normal team compliment of 15 skaters and Goalie(s).  I can only hope that players who were not selected but still want to improve their hockey skills and play at a more competitive level will see this as a challenge.   Any of the Tournament Team Coaches can review the player's specific data to focus on weak areas.

Please keep in mind that for all the players, the Atom division has not changed and we will continue to work towards improved skills for everyone while at the same time having fun and enjoying game situations.  I also want to reiterate that the Tournament Team is not exclusive to the UAE tournaments.  For those tournaments, the age groups do not conform to our divisions and new teams will have to be created.  Every player will have the opportunity to sign up for those events.  By the way, the first UAE tournament is in Dubai Nov. 20, 21.  The next UAE tournament is in Al Ain Feb. 19, 20, 2010.

As always, I'm available to discuss these issues with you either at the rink, or via email.

See you at the rink!

Coach Tim

Tournament Team:

As I have alluded to in previous correspondence, this year we are going to try to have a “Tournament Team” in the Atom division.  The provisions for such a team are covered in the SandStorms constitution.

The Tournament team will be selected from amongst interested players and will represent the most serious Atom players.  The commitment from players and families will be significant; We plan a minimum of 1 extra practice every 2 weeks as well as off-ice sessions.  Currently we have booked 2 sessions at Al Nasr on Wednesday afternoons at 1730.  In the future, we may do sessions in Al Ain on Saturdays.  There will be an additional financial commitment of 800 dhs to cover the extra ice time.  This fee does not include the planned tournament in Ascona, Switzerland.  In addition to the financial commitment, the Tournament Team players will be expected to have a very high attendance rate and be available for added training.

As part of the regular season, we will be applying the Hockey Canada National Skills Standards and Testing program. (NSST.)  Assuming that there are more players interested than there are positions, the NSST results will be weighed with performance during game situations, commitment and coachability to select the team.  The results will be determined by October 5th, with the first Tournament team practice Wednesday October 7th

If your player wants to try-out for this team, please fill out the attached form and return it to me before the October 5th session. We will select 1 goalie and 15 players with the possibility of “spares” in the case of players who cannot go to Ascona.

I am very sensitive to the fact that there may be disappointed kids if there are try-outs.   To form this team, it may be necessary to have a selection process.  Rest assured that the other Coaches and I will do everything in our power to ensure a fair process.

If you have any questions about the Atom Tournament team, please feel free to contact me.

2009/2010 Planned Atom Schedule Announced-First Practice Friday September 25th, at the Dubai Mall - Be Ready 0745

SandStorms Grow as Registration Increases

The preliminary registration numbers are in, and much to the surprise of many, the association has grown.  So far, there are over 170 players registered which is an increase over last year's 160.  The demographic distribution is pretty even with 30 or more players in Novice, Atom, Peewee, Bantam and Midget.  To properly run a 2 team division, the maximum number of players is 32, assuming 2 goalies.  Therefore, registration has been closed, with the exception of "Tykes" who still have openings.  (Isabelle will keep a wait list, and if there are enough late joining players, it may be possible to split a division into 4 teams.)

As of today, there are 33 Atom players, so there will have to be adjustments.  One player, who played Peewee last year, will move back to there.  We have about 10 new players that will have to be assessed, and I anticipate that 3 of them who are new to hockey, will have more appropriate practices in Novice.  Likewise, the Novice division will likely shift some new players to Tykes.

The basic schedule for this season will be the same as last year with Monday afternoons at Al Nasr, 1715-1845, and Friday mornings at the Dubai Mall.  There are 3 start times at the Mall and we will rotate through with the Novice and Peewee divisions.  0645, 0800 and 0915.

As a first priority for the new season, we have to select a "Touring" team in order to prepare for the Swiss tournament in December.  At our first practice I will be taking letters of intent from families who wish to participate on this team.  The commitment will not be insignificant.  The Touring team will have at least 1 additional practice every 2 weeks as well as additional off-ice sessions.  This ice time is outside the SandStorm budget and will require additional funds.  At this time my best guess is an additional fee of 500-1000 dhs per player.  The cost of travel to Ascona, will be another required expense.  Once I know which players wish to be on the Touring team, we will hold try-outs.  The selection of this team is governed by the SandStorm constitution.  Suffice to say, a fair process will be used and ultimately the most competitive possible team will be assemble.

First practice will be at the Dubai Mall on Friday Sept 25, 2009.  I look forward to seeing you there.

"Coach" Tim

The 2008-2009 Atom Season is Complete!

Thanks everyone for a terrific year of Atom hockey in Dubai.  We had 26 formal practices and 15 formal games. On top of that we had several exhibition games, including the first ever Ice Hockey Game at the Dubai Mall, two formal tournaments, one "fun" tournament and the Velenossi Clinic.  Add it all up and it comes to over 60 on-ice sessions!  In addition there were opportunities to attend the Juri Kurri Clinic and Mike Merrimen's Clinic in Al Ain.  I said at the beginning of the year we want to give the best hockey experience available, as close to 'back home' as we could, and I'd say we did it!  A special thanks to all the coaches who helped this year: Jonnie Forrest, Ray Weins, Pat Cain, Franck Pelegry, Nathalie Marcoux, Eric Hansen, Scott Herrington and Brent Day.  Also very special thanks to our Team Managers, Jim O'Shaughnessy and Stephanie Braden.

Congratulations to Nicholas Bischoff and my son Mika who had perfect attendance.  That's not easy with all those sessions and speaks volumes of their commitment not to mention their love of hockey.  In general, the attendance was excellent with a 87% rate for all games and practices.  In fact, there were 5 players who for various reasons missed a high number of sessions.  If you remove them from the equation, the actual attendance rate is 95%!  Promptness was also very good with a .1% late factor.  The efforts of the players and parents in this regard  was very much appreciated.

We are sorry to say good-bye to the following players who are leaving Dubai before next season;  Colin Herrington, Raphael and Victor De Serre and Megan Forrest*.  In addition, James O'Shaughnessy will be returning to Canada for at least one year and will miss next season in Dubai.  All of these players were a fun part of our team and all had parents who were a terrific help this year.  We will miss you guys a lot.

We had quite a few accomplishments to be proud of this year.  We completed the Hockey Canada Instructor's Guide for Novices, which is the Canadian equivalent to our group.   By not flooding the ice after the Novice sessions we were able to get  an extra 6 hours on the ice.  With so many players on the ice at one time, the extra 15 minutes every week was invaluable.  From a competitive point of view, as part of the U9 group we won the Al Ain Mall tournament at Christmas time.  Perhaps more impressively, as part of the U12B group, which is essentially a Peewee group, we won and came in 2nd with our two teams at the Abu Dhabi Tournament and then the Al Ain Tournament.  Goaltender Matty Braden had 4 shut-outs in 4 games in Al Ain and was awarded Tournament MVP.

Looking ahead to next season, I am proposing that we align the Sandstorm divisions along International standards.  If that's the case, Atoms will be for 9 and 10 year olds (as of December 31, 2009) and will essentially keep the same group in Atom next year.  The advantages are that we are able to participate in international tournaments without splitting between two divisions, the age groups were assigned after extensive study in Canada taking into account maturity and growth rates and the specific demographics at the Sandstorm's favor this alignment.  Finally, from a selfish point of view, I like coaching this group and would look forward to another season with the same bunch.  If you agree, I would appreciate your support when you talk to a Sandstorm Board member or executive.

Hopefully you were able to see the Year End DVD that Sharon, Mika and I made and were able to get your copy.  I have quite a few extra copies if you would like an additional one.  (Some of them are 'factory seconds' as they have minor spelling errors.)

Have a great summer and if I don't see at Spring Hockey, I look forward to seeing you next season.

"Coach" Tim

2009 Atom/Peewee Dubai Sandstorm Spring Hockey

Good day Sandstorm parents and players.  Last year, for the first time, the Sandstorm’s offered a “Spring League” for minor hockey.  The idea was to have a more relaxed hockey experience at a time of year in Dubai when other sports have come to an end.  (Our son goes from playing 3 sports to 0 all at the same time.)

We plan to offer a similar Spring League this year starting Friday April 24th and running for 8 weeks, ending June 12th.  Our current plan is to run 1 session for U12 players and 1 session for U8 players.  The times would be at the Dubai Mall 0800-0900 and 0900-1000 alternating every week.  This may need to be modified depending on demand, but we won’t start earlier than that!  Based on 20 skaters and 2 goalies per session, the cost will be approximately 400 dhs per player.

I would like to emphasize that this is an entirely separate league to the regular season and is, of course, completely optional.   We want a fun atmosphere and that means for the coaches as well; All the Head Coaches are a little burnt-out after a long season so please don’t sign up unless your family and player(s) really want to play more hockey and are able to commit to the 8 weeks.   It is completely understandable if you’ve had enough for this year.  This is not a developmental league and we will not be teaching basic skills; the sessions will be, for the most part, scrimmages with new teams created every week.

I need to know how many players are interested so please advise me at tsnikolai@gmail.com  by March 30, 2009.

See you at the rink,

Tim Nikolai

February 14, 2009

We have received our tourney invite for the Al Ain Under 9's and Under 12's which will take place March 13th and 14th. This is going to be another difficult-to-organize tournament and the timelines are very tight so I need to know by Wednesday Feb 18th if you want to have your player considered for this tourney.

There are several issues that further complicate this event. First of all, this is the same weekend as the Canada Week hockey activities including a Jari Kurri hockey Clinic at the Dubai Mall. Should you so desire, your player will have the opportunity to play the tournament and then have 1 day at the Jari Kurri Clinic. Combined with Dubai Baseball, Cub Scouts Pinewood Derby that weekend and the usual soccer, rugby and tennis, the weekend is very busy.

Unfortunately, the organizers have decided not to have a U9 "A" team event. The U9 players will play at the Al Ain Mall on the small rink for what will be a less formal tournament. For the players from the U9 A team I offer the following suggestions: 1) Play at the Al Ain Mall, 2) Attend the Jari Kurri camp, with the possible option to attend both days, or 3) Apply to play on the U12B team. Should you apply for the U12 team, you must be aware that Coach Kelly Jones and myself have serious reservations about having 8 year olds playing against players as old as 12. On top of the fact that some of the players are much larger than our Atom players, there is also an issue with maturity. Please don't ask us to put your player on a U12 team unless you are sure he/she is up for the challenge and you are willing to assume the potential risk. Coach Kelly and I reserve the right to exclude players who we do not believe are ready to play with much older players in a competitive environment.

Depending on the numbers we may send 1, 2 or 3 teams in each of U9 and U12. We may need to make decisions on players if we have too many for one group or not enough for another. For the U12 group, this is a competitive tourney and the goal is to compete. If your child is chosen for the tourney he must commit to the whole tourney as we have been put into forfeit situations in the past when players left early.

Finally, as I have said before, every tournament some players do not register and then the parents want to add them at the last moment. For Abu Dhabi, there were at least a dozen such cases and it causes endless work for the coaches and unfortunate disappointment for the players. Therefore, requests after Wednesday Feb 18th will NOT be considered.

There are decisions to be made and very little time. If you have any specific questions or need clarification, please write or call me soon. As usual, there is more specific/background information here.

Regards,

"Coach" Tim

Dubai Sandstorm's U9 "A" Team Falls short in Abu Dhabi - February 7, 2009

The Dubai Sandstorm's Under 9 "A" team played with determination in the Abu Dhabi Scorpion's Tournament on February 6, 2009 against an All-Star U9 team but fell just short losing the deciding Championship game.

Game 1 featured outstanding goaltending from the Abu Dhabi All-Star team.  Although the Sandstorm's outshot the opposition, the other team was able to get several breakaways and won 6-1.  The only goal to beat the huge Abu Dhabi goaltender was a beauty, with Captain Jack Day making a great cross-ice pass to Mika Nikolai who one-timed it for a goal.  Jack Day was named game MVP by the tournament organizers.

For game 2, the Sandstorm's tightened up their defense and prevented the frequent Abu Dhabi breakaways.  Bradley Ismail in particular played a stalwart game on defense using the "angling" technique taught in practice to keep the swift Abu Dhabi players to the perimeter and away from the "good" ice.  At the other end of the rink, Dubai used effective positioning and passing to solve the All-Star Scorpion goalie.  Jack had 4 goals, Ethan Berry had 1 and Mika added his second of the tournament as Dubai shocked the All-Stars 6-4.  Mika was named game MVP.

The Scorpions had a big surprise in store for the Championship game as their star goalie was switched and he became their 'ace-in-the-hole' star center.  Playing almost the entire game, he dominated and scored the first 6 goals.  The valiant Sandstorm defense just could not contain this amazing player who not only stars on Abu Dhabi's U9 team, but is the star player on their U12 "A" team!  Ruthlessly, the Abu Dhabi All Star team continued to double shift their star even with a 6-0 lead.  Adding insult to injury, their new goaltender was also very good stopping all shots against him including a couple of shots heading for the top corner of the net.  The end result was a 7-0 victory for Abu Dhabi and the U9 "A" team championship.  Micheal Nader, who had switched from left wing to defense, was named game MVP as he fought to contain the superstar Abu Dhabi player..

Head Coach Tim Nikolai said after the game that his players should "...hold their head's high, because they did everything the coach's asked of them."  He continued that he "...was proud of the discipline shown by the Sandstorm's, their fine positional play, their teamwork and most importantly, their sportsmanship."  He went on the congratulate Abu Dhabi and especially their dominate player who unbelievably is only 8 year's old despite being able to dominate players even 3 year's older.   If there is another tournament, the Sandstorm's will be ready!

Sandstorm Atoms play the first ever ice hockey game at the Dubai Mall! - November 7, 2008

Dubai Sandstorm "U9" Team Wins the Al Ain Mall Tournament

On Saturday December 20th, the Dubai Sandstorm's fielded a 9 person team in the Ai Ain Mall Ice Hockey Tournament and came away with 3 victories and the overall Championship.

All the players and coaches were seeing the Mall rink for the first time and although we were warned, it was a surprise to see just how small the ice surface was.  Interestingly, the rink is "peanut" shaped and thus was aptly named the "Peanut Rink." Nonetheless, once the games got underway, the hockey was fast paced,  high scoring and, most importantly, fun!

The Sandstorm's first game was against the young Al Ain Viper team.  Although Al Ain opened the scoring, the Standstorm's came roaring back lead by Team Captain Jack Day.  Jack scored 6 goals, but even more impressively, he set up Edouard Larouche for Edouard's first ever goal.  Other goals were scored by Tyler Cain with 2, and Mika Nikolai.  James O'Shaughnassy was steady in net as the Sandstorm's won 10-2.

The next test was more difficult against the Abu Dhabi Falcons who were led by large aggressive older player who scored most of their goals.  They also had an excellent goalie.  At one point Abu Dhabi was ahead 6-4 and their star player was playing every shift.  However, Coach Pat Cain stuck to his game and the kids came roaring back for a 10-7 victory and a trip to the Championship game.  Once again Jack Day led the goal scoring with 7, while Tyler scored another 2 and Mika added 1 with a nice end-to-end rush.

The Championship game once again featured the Sandstorms against the Falcons.  This match was even closer as the Falcons gambled by changing goalies which added another fast skater to their forward group.  Almost exclusively using their "star" players, Abu Dhabi jumped out to a 5-2 lead.  This time Coach Cain was forced to 'shorten the bench' in order to remain competitive.   The players wanted their trophies and skated harder than ever.  The Falcons resorted to some rough play but the Sandstorms were undeterred and responded with good solid checking.  Finally, Jack broke loose with 3 goals in one shift near the end of the game to establish a Sandstorm lead.  From there, James made some nice saves and Parker Bischoff was terrific on defense while Mika popped in another goal for a 7-5 victory!

The players and coaches would like to thank the Al Ain Mall for their hospitality and generosity as each player was given a medal and mall gift certificate.  Jack Day won team "MVP" honours.

The team consisted of:

Jack Day  "C", Edouard Larouche, Josh Cain, Parker Bischoff, Mika Nikolai "A", Tyler Cain "A", Maddy Day, Cooper Vanderstaff and James O'Shaughnassy in Goal.

Pictures of all the action can be seen here...

March 16, 2009

Well, I said it was going to be a "crazy" weekend of hockey and I was right, but ultimately I think it was a very satisfying and rewarding few days.

First off, congratulations to all the Dubai U12 teams at the Al Ain Tournament. The U12A team won their division while the U12B teams came in first and second providing an overall Dubai Sweep. It's a pretty impressive accomplishment when you think that the U12B Red team only had 3 Peewee players and the rest were Atoms in what is essentially a Peewee tournament. The U12B White team only had 5 Peewees.

The Juri Kurri Clinic was also a success as were the All-Star/Camel Exhibition games so congratulations to the Celebrate Canada organizing team.

Now it's back to a routine Atom Week. Practice today, Be Ready 1715 at Al Nasr.

This week's game at the Dubai Mall is Friday March 20th, Be Ready 0750.

See you at the rink!

March 8, 2009

It's a crazy busy week coming up for Sandstorm Atoms.  First of all we have a regular practice tomorrow, Monday March 9th, Be Ready 1715.  As per Jim O'Shaughnessy's email, please have your player wear his League team jersey so that we can get an overall Atom Division team picture.

This weekend, there is the Juri Kurri Clinic at the Dubai Mall as well as the U9 tournament at the Al Ain Mall and the U12 tournament in Al Ain at the Hili City rink.  The various possibilities and combinations are too complicated to recite here, so please check the Atom Website which has everything you need to know.  http://www.tsnikolai.com/atoms.htm

See you at the various rinks!

Weekly Update - February 23, 2009

Hello Sandstorm Atoms,

We have a practice at Al Nasr today, Monday February 23rd, Be Ready 1715.  Our next game is Friday February 27th at the Dubai Mall, Be Ready 0750.  We've shortened the pre-game briefing to the bare minimum in respect for the fact that it's early in the morning.  However, please have your player ready at that time.  On top of the obvious need to have a chance to instruct the players before the game, I worry about kids showing up late and hopping directly on the ice without a proper warm-up as happened last week.  A short warm-up and stretch is built into the allotted time and the players risk injury by not participating.

The "Celebrate Canada" committee has released a brochure which includes all kinds of information on hockey related activities.  They have a website, www.cwindubai2009.webs.com  You can also download the brochure from the Atom website, www.tsnikolai/atoms.htm.   As well, I have all the info on the Jari Kurri Clinic on the website in the "Atom Scheds" section.  Your contact for the Clinic is Darren Scott.   darrenjscott@gmail.com

See you at the rink,

Weekly Update - February 8, 2009

Good day Sandstorm Atoms,

I hope everyone is recovered from a busy tournament weekend in Abu Dhabi.  Congratulations to the Sandstorm U12 "A" team who won that division.  Also congratulations to our U12 "B" Red team who won the "B" tournament while the "White" team came in 2nd.  That's a clean sweep for Dubai in U12!

Congratulations are also in order for the Sandstorm U9 "B" team who won their division.  Unfortunately, the U9 "A" team was unable to win the tie-breaking "A" Championship game and had to settle for runner-up to the Abu Dhabi Scorpions.  I've written a brief summary of the U9 "A" tournament on the Atom website and would like to post some U12 stories if anyone feels like writing.

In other news, the Sandstorm Board of Director's, of which I am a member,  is asking all members to read and vote on a new constitution.  The Associations is at a bit of turning point as it has shifted towards a more formal and defined minor hockey experience for the players.  With the new rink, and the possibility of a 3rd rink in Dubai, the Association has to change the way it does business and have processes in place to deal with the present structure as well as future growth.  The move to the new rink at the Dubai Mall really underlined the problems with how business is currently done with the Sandstorm's.  Too few volunteers do too much work and end up with too much responsibility.  Parents/members feel they don't have sufficient say in things like scheduling and the end result is those same over-worked volunteers end up taking abuse when members don't like the changes.

Nick Cobbett has spent the better part of this season writing a constitution that divides and defines decision making responsibility in a more equitable manner.  We are hoping that the end result is more participation and more access to decision making by the members.

I'm realistic enough to know that not many of you have the time or interest to read through a 40 page constitutional document.  I will be happy to give you a brief summary if you wish.  In the meantime, this is your chance to vote on how the Sandstorm's do business.  Please go to the Sandstorm's Home Page, www.dubaisandstorms.com and click on "Constitution" on the left side.  There are also 2 other new documents, the "Minimum Suspension Guidelines" and the "Abuse and Harassment Policy."  While you may not have time to read these documents, I'm sure you can agree that's it's important to have them.  A vote will take place at the rink during practices and games between February 18 - 24.  Each parent of a player is entitled to one vote.  Your Team Managers will be handing out and collecting the ballots.

OK, enough of that...back to hockey.  Practice is tomorrow, Monday February 9th at Al Nasr, Be Ready 1715.  There were 6 players late last week which is a season low.  Your on-time efforts are very much appreciated.   We have a league game at the Dubai Mall, Friday, Be Ready 0745.

See you at the rink,

"Coach" Tim

Weekly Update January 31, 2009

Good day Sandstorm Atoms,

At long last, the February Atom schedule is finalized and at the same time I've received the Abu Dhabi Tournament schedule.   Everything you could possibly want to know about the tournament including times, teams, rules and location, is on the site.

The regular league schedule, which was only slightly less complicated to put together than the Manhattan Project, follows the same pattern of Monday practices and Friday morning games at the Dubai Mall.  We will rotate with the Novice group between 0645 and 0745 starts.  This compromise keeps us away from the VERY early 0600 starts while still allowing us to finish in time for the other commitments that parents/players have.

Hockey parents really are the best;  We continue to have an over 90% attendance rate and this past week on a cold and foggy early Friday morning, we had 30 out of 31 players participate.  (The one absentee was ill and advised me well in advance.)  It's a great pleasure to have the ability to set lines in advance and be able to stick to it.  (By way of comparison, Mika's baseball team averages around 60% participation for practice and slightly more for games.)  I never wanted to believe that this level of commitment couldn't be achieved in Dubai and you're proving me right.  Thank you!

Please remember to send me your passport copies if your player is playing in the Abu Dhabi tournament.  If you can't email it to me, Monday's practice will be your last chance.  Unfortunately, without proof of age, the organizers will not allow your player to play.

This week will be a practice at Al Nasr on Monday February 2nd, Be Ready at 1715.  There is no league game this weekend because of the tournament.

I've put a few video clips on the site which are highlights from the Jan. 23rd league game.  Check out some good plays by your kids.  Also, the Lost and Found has been updated as I continue to accumulate 'stuff.'

Finally, you may wish to check out the 'Magic Helmet" clip on Youtube.  The young hockey player who wrote the speech has struck a chord with minor hockey people everywhere.  While I don't think we have many of these problems here, it's always good to have a reminder of who the game is for.

See you at the rink,

"Coach" Tim

Weekly Update January 26, 2009

Good day Sandstorm Atoms,

This has been a very busy week behind the scenes with the Sandstorm's.  However, on-ice, it's a routine week with 2 sessions; Today a practice at Al Nasr, Be Ready 1715.  On Friday, we have a league game at the Dubai Mall, Be Ready 0730.

Next week the tournament in Abu Dhabi will replace the weekend game.  As soon as I have the schedule for that, I will post it.

Another reminder to please let me know if your player cannot make a session.  I don't care how late you tell me, it just helps to know beforehand.  Attendance this year has been phenomenal, with an average of 90%.  This must surely be a Dubai record!  Also, on-time performance has been very good.  However,  since the Christmas break, 1/2 of the players who don't show up also don't tell me in advance.  Of note, there are 4 players left with perfect attendance:  Nicholas Birschoff, Zach Wiens, Anthoine Pelegry and Mika Nikolai.  Well done to those players and parents!  Attendance counts.

Finally, the emails are brief, but there's always more info on the Atom site, http://www.tsnikolai.com/atoms.htm   That is also the only place where I can guarantee the scheduling information.  (By the way, if you would like a large format copy of the team picture without graphics, you can download it from the site by clicking on the picture you want.  Thanks to Steve  Braden for an excellent job of photography...the best we've ever had for Mika!)

See you at the rink,

 Weekly Update - January 18, 2009

Good day Sandstorm Atoms,

Congratulations to the Leafs who won Friday's game 5-2. There were some excellent passes which generated the Leaf goals and it's good to see the players working together. The challenge is one for the Canadien's! All the news, results and stats can be viewed here: http://www.tsnikolai.com/atoms.htm

We have 2 sessions this week; Practice tomorrow Al Nasr be ready 1715. Friday is a game at the Dubai Mall be ready 0730.

We need volunteer players to play goalie for the Novice games on Fridays. This Friday the Novice game is 0900-1000. Please let me know if your player wants to take a turn 'between the pipes.'

See you at the rink,

"Coach" Tim

January 9, 2009 Weekly Update and Tournament News

Good day Sandstorm Atoms,

This week we had 2 very good practices.  The players have really improved their concept of "hustling" and it's great to see them learning to skate "flat out!" As I told them, in order to learn how to skate fast, you have to TRY to skate fast! We also introduced the concept of "angling" as a form of checking a player and keeping him away from the "good ice."

In other news, we finally have the details of the next tournament which will take place in Abu Dhabi on February 6th and 7th.  Unfortunately, there was a mis-print in the age classification given to me at the beginning of the year and I have recently found out that the age groups are somewhat awkward for us.  There are 2 divisions, "U9," meaning players that were born in 2000 or earlier (Under 9 as of December 31, 2008) and "U12" meaning players born 1999, 1998 or 1997.  For our Atoms, that means 10 players are "U9" and the other 20 are "U12."  The coaches believe that we have enough players to field 3 U12 teams of which 1 team will be an "A" team and the other 2 will be equal "B" teams.  For the U9's, we plan to have 1 "A" team and 1 "B" team comprised of Atoms and Novices.  Kelly Jones will be the Head Coach of the U12s and Pat Cain and myself will coach the U9s.

What we need to know very soon is how many players will participate.  If we get all the players that we think will play, everyone should be able to be assigned to a team.  However, if there are fewer players than anticipated, we will field fewer teams and a selection process will be necessary.  Therefore, please let us know in writing via email by January 16, 2009 that your player will play at this tournament.  For U9, please write to me at tsnikolai@gmail.com.  For U12, you may write to me but it would be better if you sent an email directly to Kelly Jones at  kelly@yellowpages.ae  .

Please keep in mind that as we discussed at the beginning of the season, tournaments are meant as an introduction to a more competitive environment and the coaches may use more strategy in deploying their players including giving extra ice time to productive players.   This is Sandstorm's policy and applies to every division.

It seems that every year some parents don't send in the notice that their player wants to play and then we have problems when the team fills up and previously unregistered players appear.  PLEASE, let us know by the Jan. 16th if you will play and help us avoid an awkward situation.

For next week, we have an Atom practice at Al Nasr on Monday Jan 12th, be ready 1730.  We will working on skating, stick-handling and will be continue to teach basic team tactics.  Our first league game of 2009 will be next Friday Jan. 16th at the Dubai Mall, be ready 0730.  Also please note that the game on Jan 23rd has been moved up to 0730 in order to accommodate a number of families who have other engagements on Friday mornings.  If ever in doubt, please check the Atom site, http://www.tsnikolai.com/atoms.htm and click on schedules.  That site always has the latest info.

I would like to have a mid-season parent meeting will all of you on Monday.  I plan to leave the ice during the first part of practice to be available to speak with you.  Topics will be a quick mid-season summary, address scheduling issues and discuss the tournaments.  If you have anything else you would like to discuss/address, please let me know.

Don't forget to check out the lost and found which was recently updated.

See you at the rink!

Coach Tim

January 4, 2009 Weekly Update

Good day Sandstorm Players and Parents,

I hope you had a terrific holiday season and are now ready to get back onto the ice.  I've already sent you the January schedule which can always be reviewed at Sandstorm Atom Scheds

As a reminder, our next session is a practice at Al Nasr tomorrow, Jan 5/09, Be Ready at 1715.  Next will be another practice at Dubai Mall Friday Jan 9/09, Be Ready 0830.

Tomorrow's practice marks the start of "Phase 3" of the Hockey Canada Skills Development Manual that we are following.  We will be introducing more individual tactics and team skills.  Of particular importance, tomorrow we will be teaching the proper way to check using the body and stick.  At this level, players are not allowed to 'body check', but body contact is part of the proper form of checking; the players need to learn how to do it correctly.  At our last scrimmage, there were 2 incidents of "checking from behind" into the boards.  (Much to my chagrin, one was by my son...)  Checking from behind, especially into the boards, is very dangerous and I will be enforcing this message in the strongest terms.  In future games and practices, such a check will be an automatic game misconduct.  Please support me by emphasizing with your player when you talk hockey that there's no place for such a hit.

As usual,  please let me know if your player cannot make any session.  Even very late notice is better than nothing.

Finally, next week I would like to have a mid-season review with all the parents after either the Monday or Friday session.  I would like to review with you the goals for the season as well as upcoming schedules and tournaments.  If there's anything you wish to discuss with me and the other parents/coaches, please let me know.

See you at the rink,

"Coach" Tim

December 4, 2008

Good day again Sandstorm Atoms,

Great practice yesterday! The coaches agreed that the kids were the best we've seen all year. Well done!

There are a couple of important issues I need to sort out before I leave you in peace for the holidays:

Next and last session for 2008 is Friday December 12th at Dubai Mall. I need all the players to Be Ready at 0730. With any luck, there will be a coffee shop open, but just in case, we'll bring a large thermos of coffee and Parker's Dad says he'll bring the 'milk...' This session will be 1/2 practice and 1/2 special game*. Please bring both your red and your white Sandstorm jerseys as we have the annual *Red vs. White Christmas Bowl.
After some uncertainty, the "Fun Tournament" at the Al Ain Mall is going ahead on December 20th. All the details can be found here  The organizer has pretty well limited the event to players born 2000 or later, "U9." So far, only 3 Atom U9 players have confirmed and we'd like at least 2 more. If your player can definitely play, please let me know ASAP. Carpooling can be arranged if that's the stumbling block.
Please continue to let me know if your player cannot make a practice or game. It may not seem like a big deal, but if we know in advance the exact number of players, it does affect how we plan practices. For games it's even more important as all coaches decide on lines ahead of time based on who said they were coming. On the positive side, you have been exemplary with on-time performance. You guys have been unbelievably good with only 5 "lateness" recorded all year! I also really appreciate when you call that you'll be late so that we at least know you're coming. (I leave my Blackberry on until just before I go on the ice for that reason.)
That's it for now. The Sandstorms Atom  website is always up to date so please check it if you have any questions regarding schedules, standings and upcoming events. I've also uploaded new pictures and would welcome any pictures or submissions you may have. (If anyone has a Maple Leaf team picture from the first Dubai Mall game, please send it to me.)

See you next Friday at the Mall!

Coach Tim

November 29, 2008

Only 2 more ice sessions for this year.  We have next Wednesday December 3/08 at Al Nasr - BE READY at 1800* (*Note, this time is an hour later than usual because with the National Day holidays, that's all Al Nasr would give us.)   We then have our final session at the Dubai Mall, Friday December 12  BE READY 0730.  I will make sure that you can always find a reliable schedule here.  Both of these sessions will be practices.  We know that a number of players will be unavailable, but would you please make sure you advise me if you have not already done so if you cannot make it?

We have played 6 league games so far and the standings couldn't be closer with both teams tied at 6 points.  If you would like to look at all the stats, they are updated here .

As for schedules next year, we are close to a final agreement.  You cannot imagine how complicated it is trying to please all the various parties.  In short, we will be having an afternoon weekday session at Al Nasr and then a Friday morning session at Dubai mall.   Morning weekend hockey is a great Canadian tradition and I think once used to it, people will like it.  If you're still not sure, I have 2 words for you to consider...NO TRAFFIC!  The second I have the final schedule, the Atom Website will be updated.

For those who are leaving town over the holidays, have a Merry Christmas.  For the rest of us staying, see you at the rink!

Tim

Nov. 20/08

Hello Sandstorm Atoms,

Just a quick, early weekly update.

IMPORTANT:  Please note that there is NO ICE TIME NEXT MONDAY NOVEMBER 24th.    Next session will be a game at Al Nasr, Wednesday November 26th - Be Ready at 1700.

The schedule for the rest of this year and for after Christmas is still a work in progress as we figure out how best to use the ice time at the Dubai Mall.  I won't bore you (especially Magnus) with another long email, but I'll make sure you know the proper times as soon as I know.  If you are interested in more information, I will post it on the new Sandstorms Atoms website.  Please note that I've also updated the league standings, and just for Jack Day, I've updated the individual stats!

Finally, today is the last day to sign up for Coach Mike Merrimen's hockey clinic in Al Ain on Nov. 29th.  merriman.ms@gmail.com

Enjoy the week off and see you next Wednesday.

Coach Tim

Nov. 16/08

Good day Sandstorm Atoms,

Another successful, albeit busy, week for the Atom's.  The big news this week is that the Sandstorms have a tentative deal to use the Dubai Mall on a regular basis.  This change is pending Board of Director approval and subject to considerable scheduling negotiations between the teams.  However, I'm sure you would all agree that this is probably the most significant improvement to hockey in Dubai since Al Nasr first painted lines on the ice some 20 years ago!

Without getting ahead of myself, I don't mind letting you know that the ice times at the Dubai Mall will be early weekend mornings (0600-1000.)  Keep in mind that this ice time will replace ice time at Al Nasr and not be an addition.  We are currently not planning on adding time, but if we did in the future, there would be an additional cost.

In the meantime, we continue with our regular schedule.  Tomorrow (Monday) is a practice at Al Nasr with a Be Ready time of 1730.  Wednesday will be a League Game with a Be Ready time of 1700.

I would like to make one last plug for Coach Mike Merrimen's clinic in Al Ain on November 29, 2008.  As previously stated, he's an excellent coach and the kids would really benefit from a session with him.  Right now there is a lot of room for the U9's.  If we don't support this program, it won't continue, so please try to make it if you can.  We can arrange car pooling if that's the stumbling block.

Finally, I've dusted off a website I wasn't using and have put on it everything you could possibly wish to know about the Atoms including pictures, scheduling info, game results and even an archive of these messages!  www.tsnikolai.com/atoms.htm  If you have any pictures, stories or other bits you'd like to put on the site, please forward them to me.

Thanks again for your support.  It's a great parent group this year!

"Coach" Tim

Nov. 11/08:

Good day Sandstorm Atoms,

For better or worse, I have an additional change for you this week. Through a series of events, it's been to left to us to perform another 15 minute "demo" game at the Dubai Mall at 1300 on Saturday November 15th. This session is in addition to our already scheduled game with a "Be Ready" time of 1530. I realise that this extra time may not be convenient or even possible for many of you, but we only need 10 skaters and 2 goalies to put on the demo.

In order to allow the coaches to plan, would you please let me know if your player CANNOT attend either or both session on Saturday? So far I have Bradely and Noah not attending.

Thanks again for your understanding during this busy period in the hockey season!

"Coach" Tim

Nov. 9/08:

Good day Sandstorm Atoms,

I hope everyone enjoyed the experience of playing hockey in a great facility in front of many interested spectators. The game was great with a hard fought 4-4 tie. I've scanned in the article from the Gulf News. If you missed it and would like a copy, please let me know. There is no long-term news on future use of the Dubai Mall. There do not want to commit ice time to us until they have a better feel for how much public demand there will be. I would pretty well assume an unanimous desire to move as much ice time there as possible so rest assured the Association is pursuing this option.

Obviously this is a very busy time for the Sandstorm Atoms and I appreciate all the extra time and effort from the parents. It's going to be slow in December, trust me.

Once again there are 3 ice sessions this week. Here are the week's highlights:

Regular practice tomorrow at Al Nasr. It's Picture Day, with Team and Individual Photos. Normal Be Ready time is 1715, but if you can be even earlier, we'll get as many of the individual pictures done as possible before the on-ice session.
Wednesday is another practice day at Al Nasr with a Be Ready time of 1700.
Saturday is our last scheduled game, for now, at the Dubai Mall. Be Ready time is 1530. It'll be busy getting to the Mall at that time, so it's best to leave early.
Team Additions. After a couple of really close games, we've asked Kristian Hansen to be a full time goalie for us and he has agreed. Having 2 goalies will make it easier to plan practices and drills and will keep our games fair. As an added bonus, Kristian's father Erik will be helping with coaching duties focusing on goalie training.
Have a great week and see you at the rink!

"Coach" Tim

Nov. 2/08:

Good day Sandstorm Atoms,

Here is your weekly update:

We discovered that we do not need to flood the ice after the Novice practice on Mondays which allows us to be on the ice 15 minutes earlier. Therefore, the "be ready" time for tomorrow's practice is 1715. We're packing a lot into each practice in order to continue with the Hockey Canada Skills Guide as well as make time to prepare for the games, so your continued excellent attendance and on-time performance is very much appreciated!
Next game is Wednesday with a "be ready" time of 1700. It was a good game last Wednesday with the final score Canadiens 1 Maple Leafs 1. The kid's passing and positional play exceeded all expectations. Well Done!
Something to consider...Hockey Canada recommends getting the kids to dress themselves in their own hockey gear as soon as they are able. I honestly didn't think our easily distracted Mika could do it, but with only minor help, he's taken to independence. It takes twice as long and of course I still help with the skates, but he's doing it. The advantages are teaching responsibility and starting to develop camaraderie in the dressing room with a side benefit that the dressing room isn't so crowed.
We attended the Al Ain hockey clinic last Saturday with coach Mike Merrimen. Mike is probably the most qualified coach in the UAE and for 50 dhs, the kids received expert instruction for an hour and 15 minutes. There were only 14 U9 players, so more will be needed to keep this program viable. I encourage you to attend the next session Nov. 29th. There is room in the U12 session as well. To be very honest, the level of the kids there was quite a bit lower than you see at our Atom group, but the ice is good and it's a particular benefit for kids who need extra work with their skating. We can arrange for car pooling next time as well. Please talk to me at the rink if you have more questions.
That's it for now. See you at the rink this week, and if not, please let me know.

Final Hockey Checklist Prior to Ascona

Once again thanks to Lynda for undertaking the onerous task of travel planning.  In her discussion with the parents at hockey yesterday, the decision was made to use the remaining "ice-time" money to pay for the bus transfer between Milan and Ascona.  The original money I collected for ice time is now completely spent.  In the interest of full disclosure, I have put a link on the TT website with the ice-time budget.

In addition to all the travel details and reminders, here is a check-list of items from the hockey side:

  • Although we plan to wear Red, please bring both red and white SandStorms jerseys
  • Please ensure that you have SandStorm hockey socks
  • Players and coaches are required to travel with collared shirt and tie
  • The ice is bound to be quite hard.  Skate sharpening is recommended.  I have spoken to Spud and he's available today and tomorrow late-afternoon.
  • Coach Darryn is putting all the sticks in one large stick bag. If you haven't already given him your stick, he can collect it at the airport.
  • There is a family skate on Friday, so parents may wish to bring their skates
  • I have received the tentative schedule for Saturday's tournament and I have posted it on the TT website
  • Obviously this is an exciting adventure for the players, but the priority is the hockey experience.  With that in mind, we will need to have a curfew for the players on Friday and Saturday nights.

The team has worked very hard to get ready for this.  (3 extra games, 7 extra practices and 2 off-ice sessions!) The Coaches are confident that the players are ready and will do themselves proud!

See you at the rink Thursday.

Go SandStorms Go!

Coach Tim

Last Week Before Ascona Trip!

I am very much aware of the potential confusion with your player on 2 hockey teams at the same time.  Just to be clear, this week we have our final 2 extra TT sessions before we leave for Switzerland.

Tomorrow, Wednesday December 9th, we have a practice at Al Nasr, Be Ready 1730.  Then on Saturday, December 12th, we have another Peewee Challenge, at the Dubai Mall, Be Ready 0845.  As always, I need to know ASAP if your player is unable to attend.

The schedule on the TT site is up to date if you ever have any questions.

Speaking of Ascona, I am seeking a specific schedule for the tournament on Saturday Dec. 19th and I'll let you know when I get it.  I do know that we have a full ice tournament on that day followed Sunday by a trip to another town, Rivera, for a 1/2 ice 4 on 4 tournament with other towns in the area.  Ascona will lending us a player and goalie so that we can field 2 teams in that tourney.

Just in case your player doesn't have a tie, be advised that we're expecting all players and coaches to travel with a collared shirt and tie.

If you have any specific questions or concerns please let me know.

See you tomorrow at the rink.

Coach Tim

Current Atom TT News

As previously mentioned, we are pleased with the performance of our TT in the recent U12A tournament.  However, we have now played 6 games as a team and there are some glaring areas that need improvement. Abu Dhabi was unable to put together a team to challenge us this weekend and it's just as well as I believe we need the practice time.  As Head Coach, I'm really eager to utilize the 2 ice sessions we have booked at the Dubai Mall this weekend.  Having the big ice surface is a real bonus as there are specific skills we need to work on.   At this time, we have booked Friday November 27th, Be Ready 0730 and Saturday November 28th Be Ready 0845.  I realize that some of you have holiday plans for the start of the Eid break.  In fact, I know of 2 players that can't make it Friday and 3 who can't make it Saturday.  Based on those numbers we'll go ahead, but if there are many more, we'll have to have a re-think.

If I can make an appeal, it's more difficult to get "extra" ice time in Dubai than you may be aware.  To get 2 quality hours is a rare occurrence.  Furthermore, the team is on the cusp of making significant improvements; Even more encouraging, there is some real team bonding starting to develop.  It was apparent this weekend that a younger group that plays as a team can challenge an older team with several elite players.  All this is to appeal to the player's families; if you could please make every effort to attend these sessions, I believe that it will be worthwhile.  If you still can't make it, please let me know ASAP.

I've updated the TT schedule for December.  So far, there's an extra ice session booked Sunday Dec. 6th.  I know Sundays are not popular so I'm looking for other options.  I've also added a much needed Off-Ice session on Wednesday Dec. 2nd at our Villa, C-86 - Dubai Silicon Oasis.  Again this is during the Eid break from school so I've scheduled it from 1500-1730 and I'm hoping for good attendance.

That's it for now,

Coach Tim

Atom TT schedule Update

I hope your players enjoyed our full hockey day last Friday with a game in Dubai and then a practice in Al Ain with Coach Mike Merriman followed by a game.  I couldn't have been more proud of our players at the practice.  Coach Mike was worried that his exercises would be too advanced, but the kids quickly impressed him and he was smiling when he said some of his 18 year old players struggled with these drills!  The kids were also very well behaved during the car pooling drive and looked sharp in their travel dress code.

Unfortunately Al Ain were unable to give us the kind of game we need to improve so after an easy victory, we have set up a challenge at the other end of the spectrum.  We now have an exhibition game on Wednesday Nov. 18th at Al Nasr, Be Ready 1815.  We'll be playing a team of select Peewee players so it will be a very difficult test for our team.  We'll need "all hands on deck" so please let me know ASAP if your player is unavailable.

Other additional sessions:

  • Friday Nov. 20th U12A Tournament, Al Nasr.  Schedule available here.  (Note, we'll be the Dubai A2)
  • Friday Nov. 27 Tentative Exhibition Game vs. Abu Dhabi Falcon All-Star team.  Be ready 0715.
  • Saturday Nov. 28.  Tentative Ice Time booked at Dubai Mall - Pending player availability

If you have any questions, or your player cannot make any of these sessions, please let me know.

Coach Tim

October 27, 2009

Hello Atom TT members,

It's come to my attention that some of you may not be aware of what extra TT sessions we're planning for November.  The website I set up is up-to-date. http://www.tsnikolai.com/atom%20tournament%20team.htm  and from there you can click on the schedule link.    http://www.tsnikolai.com/atom_tournament_team_schedule.htm

Of note, we have a Sunday practice on Nov. 1st.  I know Sunday is not as good as Wednesday, but I've been informed that as of now, there are no Wednesdays available in November.  Because of that, as there were no regular sessions at the DM during the Eid break (Nov. 27/28)  I booked 2 sessions for the TT.    We have a tentative trip to Al Ain on Nov. 13th for a total of 4 extra on-ice sessions in November.

It's very difficult to find extra ice time in Dubai and I'm trying my best to keep it to Wednesdays, but it's not always possible so I appreciate your flexibility.  There is some urgency as I feel the team is a long way away from being ready for an International tournament.

I need to know ASAP if your player cannot attend any of the scheduled November sessions.  If too many cannot make certain sessions, I'll have to cancel them, however but understand that I have no idea where we'll make up the time.

Thanks in advance for your consideration of this issue,

Tim

Tournament Team Update

On the training front, our next practice will be Wednesday Oct. 21st at Al Nasr.  Be Ready at 1715.   In the meantime, I'm encouraging every player to practice shooting the puck.  That is one area where we are weak, but can improve without ice time.  Unfortunately it is very difficult to get this ice time on a regular basis.  For your planning purposes, our next planned on-ice practice is Sunday November 1st 1845-1945.  After that, I'm working on a friendly game in Al Ain vs. the Vipers on Friday November 13th.  I'll have more info once it's confirmed.

For the upcoming Dubai Tournament, Nov. 20, 21, I am going to assume that all the TT players will attend.  If such is not the case, you can email me by exception.  Our initial plan is to keep the team together as a tune-up for Switzerland.  We'll be at a disadvantage as we won't have 1998 players as allowed in a U12 tournament.  However, it's more important for the team to learn to work together and learn the style of play that the Coaches want.

Please remember that all the info you need on the TT, as well as the trip to Ascona is here:  http://www.tsnikolai.com/atom%20tournament%20team.htm

See you at the rink,

Coach Tim

Hello!

I have more information and several questions and requests.  Please read carefully and PLEASE don't get angry with me - I'm asking for lots of money!

I have just been speaking with Emirates.  We have been given a slightly reduced fare for the children.  With taxes included, the price per child (12 years and under) will be Dh 3153.  The adult fare remains at Dh 3625.

In order to keep the discounted group fare AND to keep payment efficient and uncomplicated, I ask that you pay me directly in cash or by cheque.   I do hope that this will not cause difficulties with anyone.   I will hire a bodyguard (Ray would be a good candidate, don't you think?) or maybe I could find a 250 kg safe to drag along behind me!  (hee hee)

I made a 25% deposit today (thanks to Tim's card!) and another 25% in cash is due by Thursday.  I kindly and humbly request that you bring fat wallets to Monday's practise.  Below are the fares as calculated by the information you gave me - i.e. who is travelling:

 1 adult, 1 child = Dh 6778  minimum 25%  Dh 1,695
 2 adults, 1 child = Dh 10,403       "                  Dh 2,600
 1 adult, 2 children = Dh 9931       " Dh 2,483
 2 adults, 2 children = Dh 13,556         " Dh 3,390

I need Dh 25,000 in cash by Thursday morning.  Sorry to do this, but don't think there is any other option.

I don't think anyone requires visas, but let me know if you are unsure.  I will get the information.

If you are travelling on a different flight/day/airline, I  am assuming you are making arrangements for transportation to Ascona.

Several have already paid the Dh 800 extra ice-time fee - thank you.  I will be collecting that on Monday or Wednesday evening also.  Cheques for this can be made out to Sandstorms.

I met with Catherine Guerriero today to enquire about team jackets.  She is sourcing a supplier this week.  I have opted for red stretch jersey knit, with fleece as a second option.  These will, hopefully, be zippered (full length - not pullover) with Dubai Sandstorms and the logo on the left front and a Swiss flag with 2009 embroidered on the top right sleeve.  The estimated cost is Dh 120-150.  Would you please let me know if you are interested, what size(s) - adult, child and how many of each.

The accommodation is as follows:
Casa Eden - 10 children, 8 adults  (but we have to pay for 25 people minimum)
23 persons x 4 nights = Fr 2,200  (Dh 7,940 total   or Dh 345 per person)

Hotel - 8 families (24 people)
1 room with 2 beds (2 people) Fr 540  (Dh 1,950)

apartment  with 4 beds (4 people) Fr 904  (Dh 2,712)

Marco says the apartment is better than a double room - don't know why.

I am waiting for confirmation but I believe this to be the total price for 4 nights also.

Over the next month, the Marcos will be selecting the restaurants (evening meals) and will give us an idea of those costs in a few weeks.

If you have any questions, concerns, issues, changes - PLEASE LET ME KNOW ASAP!

Okay, I think that is it for now.

See you soon,

Lynda

Hello everyone!

First, PLEASE RESPOND ASAP to this message.  (Lynda Forsythe, Team Manager - lyndaforsythe@gmail.com  Mobile - 050 349 3950)

The Swiss organizers have made arrangements to collect us from the Milan airport and take us to the hotel. I have not received any notification of a fee, but this was a potentially major issue which has been very pleasantly and gratefully resolved.  The distance is approximately 80 kms so once everyone and 'sundries' are loaded, it should be about an hour's drive.  Not too bad, I think.  Be there will be some  beautiful scenery!

I contacted several airlines regarding flights to Milan.  In the end, only Emirates can reasonably accommodate our large group at the appropriate times.

EK Airlines direct (6 hrs 15 min) - Dh 3,685 TAXES INCLUDED.

EK are offering a discount (regular economy fare is over Dh 4,800 before taxes just looking on line)  The outbound date is fixed on December 17, but the inbound (return) is slightly flexible - based on a fee of Dh 190, if seats are available.  This might actually be worthwhile for those that would like to stay longer.

There is some URGENCY with this price, however.  EK are asking for confirmation TODAY!!!!  (If I knew how to highlight in red, I would.)

Now, on to accommodation.

Again, our gracious hosts have booked our hotel.  It is a 'group' house offering 9 rooms, 35 beds (including bunk beds), large lounge, dining room, kitchen, 4 showers and a large balcony.  Marco Baumer (the tournament organizer) has suggested that this might be the best (and least expensive) option for us.  The 'proper' hotel is nearby on the same property and rooms are available, should you decide you would like more privacy.  In "Casa Eden", we will definitely get to know each other - good?  bad?  Who knows, but I bet it will be fun!  The team will be able to bond a little better, I think, in this atmosphere as long as the adults can withstand the potentially high noise levels???!!!   Might I suggest earplugs??

Breakfast is included.  Maybe we get our own chef?

I will have pictures and information with me tonight and at every practise, should anyone want to browse through the pages.

Marco, et. al.  have also prepared a sort of itinerary;

We arrive Thursday evening.  If necessary, we may have to arrange for our dinner that night.  The local children will be in school on Friday, so we will tour around Ascona having lunch wherever (I'm sure we will be tempted by many choices).  There is a party at the rink Friday and dinner in Gordola (20 kms away).

The tournament begins on Saturday (lunch at the rink) with dinner in Locarno (again, nearby).  Marco says there is wonderful Christmas atmosphere!!!! YEAH!

The PeeWees play in Ascona on Sunday, so we will travel to Rivera to play our games (lunch at the rink) with dinner again in Locarno or Ascona.

He also mentioned a visit to a CHOCOLATE FACTORY!!!!  How COOL is that?   I'm SOOOO excited!

I will be in touch with  Marco Torti on Sunday with more details.

All in all, I think this will be a fabulous trip for everyone.

Many thanks to Tim, the coaches, the Sandstorm organization and all the others who dedicate their time, energy and patience to make this and EVERYTHING else in hockey happen!

Cheers,

Lynda

Atom Tournament in Switzerland - December 18-20, 2009

The Sandstorm's Atom and Peewee divisions have been invited to a tournament in Ascona, Switzerland December 18-20, 2009.  Subject to Sandstorm Board approval, I have tentatively agreed to send our team.

This is a tremendous opportunity for our players.  Last year, I was searching for an International tournament that would be relatively easy for us to travel to.  Basically, the closest place to find good hockey programs is southern Europe.  By coincidence, I was contacted at that time by former Sandstorm coach Marco Torti to see if we'd like to play games against his son's teams in Ascona.  Since that time, a formal tournament has been organized with approximately 6 teams from throughout Switzerland and they are very excited to have teams from Dubai participating.

Ascona is approximately 1 hour drive north from Milan, Italy, which is the closest airport and is well serviced from Dubai.  It is located in the Italian part of Switzerland. The Ascona association would meet us at the airport and bus us to their town.  The plan is to use their outdoor rink, weather permitting, which would be a tremendous experience for our desert based kids!

Our goal will be to make the best possible representation, so I'd like to field a team of 15 competitive players.  With that in mind, I am giving you plenty of time to arrange your Christmas holiday plans.

Of note, there are many ski resorts close to Ascona, including world famous St. Moritz in case families wished to prolong their stay and do some skiing!

This is a big undertaking, so I'll be looking for a tournament coordinator we when get back in September.  We would also like to secure sponsorship to help with the costs so if you have any ideas or could help in that regard, please let me know.

This is a chance of a life time...LET'S DO IT!!!
